Our Eye Doctors

Eye care professionals specialize in understanding how the human eye really works, as well as diseases and conditions that affect your vision – many of which do not have obvious symptoms. Eye doctors know how age and risk factors affect vision over time for young and old, and they understand the benefits and features of corrective lenses including eyeglasses and contacts.

Our optometrists take the time to explain the results of your eye exam, describe your options and listen to your eye care needs. Because maintaining good eye health is an ongoing partnership, we encourage you to ask questions and share your health information, which could be vital to monitoring, diagnosing and treating potential vision problems.

Meet our doctors:

Dr. Judith Brisson

Dr. Brisson graduated from the University of Waterloo – School of Optometry and has practiced in Guelph since 1977. She has a special interest in contact lens fitting.

Dr. Brisson has served her profession on committees of both the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the College of Optometrists of Ontario. She is an active volunteer, having served on a number of non profit boards.

In her spare time, she is creating a native wildflower garden at her home and enjoys sailing on Georgian Bay with her family.

Dr. P. Lynne Leis

Dr. Leis graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1989. After practising in Brantford for five years, she returned to her home area in 1994, joining Dr. Brisson in providing full service family eye care in Guelph.

Dr. Leis enjoys spending weekends and evenings with her family. She relaxes by playing the piano or curling up with a good book.

Dr. Reita Thomas-Parel

Dr. Reita Thomas-Parel graduated from the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry in 1998, and has been practicing in Guelph since 1999. She has a special interest in contact lenses and pediatrics.

Dr. Thomas-Parel is an active volunteer in the community. She has been involved with the Y’s Women of Distinction Panels, she participated as a health care provider in a wellness screening program held at Shelldale Centre run through Guelph Community Health Center, she has spoken at various elementary and high schools, she is parent volunteer at her own children’s school, and she is involved at her home parish of St. Joseph’s.

Health and wellness are very important to Dr. Thomas-Parel, and she is often training for a 5 or 10 km run somewhere in Ontario. She even climbed the CN tower stairs one spring! She can often be found hiking on various trails throughout Guelph with her three children. Her downtime is spent taking photos and creating coffee table photo books with them. She is currently enrolled in a fine arts class to unleash her creative side!

Dr. Rafaela Thé

Dr. Rafaela Thé graduated with her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 2011. She is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, and is proud to be a participating member in the Eye See Eye Learn program.

While in optometry school, Dr. Thé participated in three eye care missions in both rural Thailand and the United States. During these mission trips she provided eye exams, treated ocular disease, and distributed glasses to people in need.

When she is not at work, Dr. Thé enjoys spending time with her husband and her two little boys. She also enjoys photography and entertaining with friends.

Dr. Thé loves her chosen profession. She continually strives to provide excellent eyecare, with both integrity and kindness, to her patients.

Dr. Violet Zawada-Kuzio

Dr. Violet Zawada Kuzio graduated from School of Optometry at the University of Waterloo. She has embarked on numerous other academic endeavors prior to her optometric training, beginning in her hometown of Guelph as a proud graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School. This was followed by a Biomedical Science degree from the University of Guelph and then a Masters degree in Education from the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Zawada Kuzio’s passions include community service, the dramatic arts and exploring the tranquility of nature with her family. She considers herself a life long learner and has been actively involved in research studies pertaining to learning diversity and preventative medicine.

Dr. Jiachang (Iris) Shen

Dr. Shen received her optometry degree in Hong Kong with first class honours. She then worked at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In addition to providing optometry services to the public, she tutored clinical labs for the university’s optometry program and supervised a student service trip to rural China providing eye care with free glasses from donations. She has a special interest in the control of nearsightedness and the management of ocular diseases. She received residency training in contact lenses in Hong Kong, and completed the International Optometry Bridging Program at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Shen is board certified in both Canada and Hong Kong.

Dr. Shen loves her profession and devotes herself to promoting eye care in the community. She has been actively participating in various community vision screenings, including the Special Olympics, since she was an optometry student. In office, she always strives to demonstrate changes in prescription and explain any diagnoses in detail.

In her free time, she dog sits for friends. She also likes to travel. Her favorite activity is snorkeling, where she can swim with tropical fish and turtles. She also enjoys cooking and experimenting with recipes from all over the world.
