What Your Child Should Expect During Their Eye Exam

Much like our adult and senior eye exams, we ensure our children’s exams are both comprehensive and enjoyable.

The Initial Discussion

We understand that eye exams might be a little scary, particularly for young children, especially if they haven’t had one before. But our doctors and optometric assistants work closely with your child to ensure their eye exam experience is as comfortable and engaging as possible!

Once our doctors introduce themselves to you and your child, you both will be personally escorted to our exam room, where we’ll start by discussing your child’s personal and family health history, as well as review any vision or eye problems they may have.

Visual Acuity Testing

After our initial conversation, our doctors will test your child’s visual acuity; their ability to see shapes or letters, depending on their age. Conditions like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism can all affect your child’s visual acuity.

By using tried-and-tested tools that are comfortable for your child, like a Snellen eye chart together with a phoropter, we can determine the lens prescription they may need to see as clearly as possible.

Eye Disease Assessment

Even though your child’s eyes are still growing, they aren’t immune to developing eye diseases and conditions that could permanently rob them of their vision. By using non-invasive technology, including fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, we can diagnose these issues and provide meaningful solutions and strategies to optimize your child’s sight.

Our Findings & Recommendations

At the end of the exam, our optometrists will discuss all of our findings with you and recommend a suitable management or treatment plan that best suits your child.

Eye exams are an excellent opportunity to teach your child about the importance of proper eye care. We never miss a chance to provide information your child can use to maintain their vision for years to come.

If your child requires glasses or contact lenses, we’ll have you visit our fantastic optometric assistants to find the right options for your child’s needs.

If your child is interested in contact lenses, we will schedule a contact lens fitting to determine which contacts are best suited for them. We can also teach your child how to correctly care for their contact lenses and how to safely insert and remove the lenses from their eyes.

Children’s Eye Exams Schedule

The First Eye Exam

The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends infants have their first eye appointment at 6 to 9 months of age. While your baby might not have fully developed vision at this age, early warning signs of eye conditions like strabismus (crossed eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye) can start to appear.

Early detection is key to treating vision problems or managing symptoms, which is why this initial exam is so important.

The Second Eye Exam

The CAO suggests that children undergo their second eye exam between the ages of 2 and 5 years. At this age, your child is starting to develop essential skills related to their vision, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

By making sure these skills are developing correctly, you can help your child maintain their quality of life and help keep their vision clear and healthy as they grow up.

The CAO recommends school-aged children have their eyes examined annually.

Spot the Early Warning Signs

Eye care is especially important at a young age. As mentioned earlier, your child might not have the ability to communicate if they are experiencing problems with their vision.

Your child may be experiencing a vision problem if they:

Have red, itchy, or irritated eyes.
Tilt or otherwise reposition their head when they are watching television or reading.
Cover one eye to see objects at different distances.
Complain of frequent headaches.
Have trouble reading.

If your child is exhibiting these symptoms, you should schedule an eye exam for them as soon as possible. Conditions such as myopia or astigmatism can develop gradually and eventually harm your child’s vision permanently.
