Find Relief From Your Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eyes are incredibly annoying. Not only are they uncomfortable, but they can also impact your quality of life. Though dry eyes can occur for many reasons, they are often caused by medications, environmental sensitivities, and digital eye strain.

However, you don’t have to suffer from dry and irritated eyes any longer. At Clarity Optometry, we work with you to find the root cause of your dry eye symptoms and develop a plan to reduce, mitigate, and possibly eliminate the problem.

If you are ready to say goodbye to dry eye, please book an appointment to see our eye care team today!

What are Dry Eyes?

Your eye’s tear film is responsible for keeping your eyes hydrated and comfortable and is made up of 3 different layers: a mucin layer, an aqueous layer, and a lipid layer.

Dry eyes may be evaporative, meaning your tears disappear too quickly, or aqueous deficient, resulting from poor tear quality and/or insufficient tear production. Alternatively, you may suffer from a combination of the two.

Dry eye symptoms often include:

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Excessive tearing
  • Stringy discharge
  • Soreness
  • Blurry vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Itchiness

What Can Increase My Risk of Developing Dry Eye?

Dry eye develops for a variety of reasons, and not all dry eye sufferers experience the exact same symptoms. There are various factors that can affect your tear film:

  • Medications: Many medications cause dry eyes as a side effect.
  • Medical conditions: Systemic diseases may cause dry eyes.
  • Laser eye surgery: Dry eye symptoms are a common side effect of the healing process and typically subside once the eyes are fully healed.
  • Getting older: Older adults are more likely to develop dry eyes than their younger peers.
  • Being female: Studies have shown that hormonal changes experienced while taking birth control and going through pregnancy or menopause can affect the quality of tears produced.
  • Environmental factors: Consistent exposure to wind, smoke, and dry air can all contribute to dry eyes.
  • Eye strain: Prolonged focusing causes a reduced blink rate, preventing us from producing enough tears to keep our eyes lubricated and comfortable.

While all of these can increase the risk of developing dry eyes, this irritating condition can also be caused by Meibomian gland dysfunction, Demodex infestation on your eyelashes, or blepharitis.

Our Treatment Options

Dry eyes can leave you craving hydration and comfort. Our team is ready to find solutions for you, so you can get back to enjoying comfortable vision! Our doctors will carefully select the appropriate eye lubricants and supplements, both prescription and non prescription, to relieve your symptoms.

Artificial tears, or lubricating eye drops, are the most common dry eye treatment. They can provide relief and maintain the health of your cornea. We can offer a range of artificial tears tailored to your specific needs and dry eye condition.

Our experienced team can recommend specialty lid cleaners specific to your needs. If the cause of your dry eye is more severe, our doctors may need to clean your eyelids periodically.

Prescription medications including eye drops and oral medication may be needed to manage your dry eyes. Some non-prescription supplements, such as omega-3s, may be recommended. Your optometrist will prescribe and recommend treatments for you after assessing your eyes.

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid that can lead to sore, red, or even crusty eyelids. We can treat blepharitis using a treatment tailored specifically to your needs. This may include medicated eyelid wipes, ointments, gels, and oral medications.
